What Are Visibility KPIs? Nine Measures From Impressions to AI Citations
Here is a fact that surprises most marketing teams. The visibility number that moves earliest is usually not in any SEO tool. It is your share of category search, and it tends to shift before your market share does. Everything else fits into nine measures: impressions, average position, click-through rate, the share of important pages indexed, branded search volume, map views and direction requests, social reach, YouTube watch time, and how often an AI assistant names you.
A visibility KPI is one of those nine that somebody has agreed to steer by. The word KPI stands for key performance indicator, and the key part is doing real work there. Three of the nine measure whether search sees you, three measure whether your foundations are sound, and three measure whether anyone outside Google notices.

What is the difference between a KPI and a metric?
A metric is any number a system can produce. A KPI is a metric somebody has been made accountable for, and that promotion is the whole difference. Impressions sit in every Search Console account on earth as a metric. They become a KPI on the day a named person agrees to raise them by a stated amount before a stated date.
A metric counts, a KPI commits
Your analytics will hand you hundreds of metrics without being asked. None of them change behavior on their own. A KPI changes behavior because it has a target attached, and because somebody will be asked about it in a meeting that is already on the calendar.
The two-question test
Before you call a number a KPI, answer two questions out loud. Who owns it, and when do we look at it next. If either answer is vague, you have a metric. Keep it on the dashboard by all means, just stop pretending it is steering anything.
| Measure | What it answers | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions | How often search showed us at all | Search Console |
| Average position | How high we sat when shown | Search Console |
| Click-through rate | Whether the listing earned the click | Search Console |
| Share of important pages indexed | Whether the pages that sell are in the index | Search Console, page inventory |
| Branded search volume | Whether demand for the name is growing | Search Console, Google Trends |
| Map views and direction requests | Whether nearby people act | Google Business Profile |
| Social reach | How many accounts saw a post | Platform insights |
| YouTube watch time | Whether video holds attention | YouTube Studio |
| Named in AI answers | Whether assistants cite us | Manual prompt log |
Three search measures: impressions, position and click-through rate
BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ
- Impressions: were you in the room
- Average position: how high, on average
- Click-through rate: did the listing earn the click
These three live in the same report and answer three different questions. Impressions tell you whether search showed your page at all, and average position tells you roughly how high it sat. Click-through rate tells you whether the listing was worth clicking. Read in that order, they localize a problem in about two minutes.
Impressions: were you in the room
An impression is one appearance of your page in a results list, whether or not anybody looked at it. Falling impressions mean search is showing you less often, which is a coverage problem. Rising impressions with flat clicks is a different problem entirely.
Average position: how high, on average
Average position is a weighted average across every query and appearance, so at site level it hides more than it reveals. Filtered to one page group or one query set, it earns its place. At that level a one-step gain is real.
Click-through rate: did the listing earn the click
Click-through rate, usually written CTR, is clicks divided by impressions. A strong position with a weak CTR is almost always a title and description problem, not a ranking problem. It is the cheapest fix on the list and the one teams skip most.
Three foundation measures: indexed pages, branded search, map actions
BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ
- Share of important pages indexed
- Branded search volume
- Map views and direction requests
This family tells you whether the groundwork holds. A page that is not indexed cannot rank, be clicked or be quoted. A name nobody searches for has no demand behind it yet. And a local business that collects views but no direction requests is being seen by the wrong people.
Share of important pages indexed
Count your commercially important pages, then how many Google has indexed. That ratio is the measure, not the raw total. Say a valve manufacturer in Konya has 40 product pages and 31 indexed. Seventy-eight percent is the number to move, and it moves faster than any ranking.
Branded search volume
Branded search is people typing your name rather than your category. It is the closest free reading of brand health you can get, and it responds to advertising, trade fairs and word of mouth. Separating branded from non-branded queries belongs with brand visibility.
Map views and direction requests
For anyone with a physical address, the Google Business Profile numbers matter more than rankings. Views say you appeared. Direction requests and calls say somebody decided to come, so treat those as the KPI.

Three outside measures: social reach, watch time and AI citations
BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ
- Social reach, not followers
- YouTube watch time
- Being named in AI answers
Search is not the whole surface. Three measures cover the places where people meet your brand without typing anything into Google. Social reach counts accounts, YouTube watch time counts minutes, and AI citations count mentions inside an answer that was written for somebody else by a machine.
Social reach, not followers
Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw a post, far smaller than your follower count. If your team argues about which figure to report, the difference between reach vs impressions is worth settling once.
YouTube watch time
Watch time is total minutes watched, and it is the number YouTube itself optimizes around. Views flatter you. Watch time tells you whether the first fifteen seconds did their job.
Being named in AI answers
Google states that pages shown in its AI features must be indexed and snippet-eligible, with no extra markup required. Measurement here is manual for now: nine buying questions, asked monthly, with the brands named in each answer written down. If you never appear, why ChatGPT does not mention your brand is the diagnostic to run.
Share of search: the measure that moves before your market share
BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ
- What Les Binet found
- How to build it in an afternoon
- Where it misleads
Share of search is your brand’s slice of all searches in your category. Divide searches for your name by searches for every brand in the category, including yours. It costs nothing to build, it goes back years, and in several industries it has turned out to lead market share rather than follow it.
What Les Binet found
At the IPA’s EffWorks Global 2020 conference, Les Binet presented share of search as a cheap, fast and predictive brand metric built from Google Trends data. Across car, energy and mobile phone categories, share of search correlated with market share and tended to move first. Lead times varied by category and ran up to about a year in automotive.
How to build it in an afternoon
List your three to six real competitors. Pull Google Trends for each brand name in your country, export the weekly series, and calculate each brand’s share of the group total. Repeat quarterly, and read the direction of your line rather than its level.
Where it misleads
Share of search breaks when a brand name is also a common word, when the category is tiny, or when a competitor campaigns under a different name. A number you cannot explain is worse than no number.

How many of these should a small team actually carry?
BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ
- Pick by where your buyers look
- Give each one a target and a date
- Review monthly, judge quarterly
Three, reviewed monthly, for at least two quarters. A dashboard with forty-seven numbers on it is not a dashboard. It is a weather wall: interesting, constantly changing, and nobody reorganizes their week because of it. Three numbers with three owners will move a business further than nine numbers with none.
Pick by where your buyers look
A clinic with a waiting room picks map actions, branded search and CTR. A manufacturer picks indexed page share, impressions on product queries and AI citations. A creator-led brand picks reach, watch time and branded search.
Give each one a target and a date
Write the sentence out in full. Raise indexed share of product pages from 78 to 95 percent by the end of March 2026, owned by whoever edits the site. Vague targets quietly become optional.
Review monthly, judge quarterly
Look every month so you catch breakage early, and judge every quarter, because search data is noisy at shorter intervals. For the reading routine itself, how to read an SEO report sets out the order to open the tabs in.
So now you know the shape of it. Nine measures, grouped three by three, with one of them quietly predicting the others. Promote three, name an owner for each, and leave the rest as context.
Common mistake: reporting site-wide average position as the headline KPI. Averaged across thousands of queries it can improve while every page that sells gets worse, or drop because you started appearing for new long-tail queries at position 40. Filter it to one page group before you let anyone make a decision on it.
Pick your three, write the owner and the date beside each, and put the review on the calendar before you close the tab. If you would rather have the measurement set up and reported for you, that is part of our visibility work, and the agency vs in house marketing comparison covers who should hold the dashboard.

Sık Sorulan Sorular
Three, reviewed monthly and judged quarterly. Each one needs a named owner, a numeric target and a date. The other six measures stay on the dashboard as context, which means you look at them when a KPI moves and you want to know why. Teams that promote all nine usually end up steering by none of them.
Not at site level. It is a weighted average across every query and appearance, so it can improve while your commercial pages slide, or fall simply because you started appearing for new low-position queries. Filtered to one page group or one query set it becomes genuinely useful, and a single step of improvement there is a real gain.
Manually, for now. Write down nine questions a real buyer would ask, run them monthly in the assistants your market uses, and record which brands get named in each answer. Google states that appearing in its AI features requires only that a page is indexed and snippet-eligible, so there is no setting to switch on and no file to upload.
