What should export packaging and labels look like?
💡 Kısaca: Packaging that works at home may not survive export.

Packaging that works at home may not survive export. Long journeys, container humidity, transhipments; goods arrive damaged. And if the label doesn’t meet the target market’s language and rules, the product can’t reach the shelf. 📦

Export packaging does three jobs: it protects the product, meets the rules and carries the brand.

Short answer: design export packaging to be strong enough for the journey, labelled for the market and efficient for logistics. Check labelling requirements market by market in advance. 🧭

Note: foreign trade regulations, procedures and support schemes change; get current information from your customs broker, your bank and the Ministry of Trade.

FOUR

Four packaging layers

BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ

  • Product packaging
  • Inner protection
  • Outer carton
  • Pallet and loading

From inside out. 🧱

Product packaging

The box consumers see; brand and label live here. 🎁

Inner protection

Padding, dividers, moisture protection; prevents damage. 🛡️

Outer carton

Strong for transport, stackable; marked. 📦

Pallet and loading

Securing, stretch wrap, container layout. 🚛

LABELLING

Labelling requirements

BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ

  • Language
  • Mandatory information
  • Conformity marks
  • Barcodes and codes

Four headings. 🏷️

Language

Mandatory information in the target market’s official language. 🔤

Mandatory information

Manufacturer, origin, contents, use, warnings; varies by market. 📋

Conformity marks

Required marks correct and compliant; see the compliance guide. ✅

Barcodes and codes

Codes readable in the buyer’s systems. 🔢

EFFICIENCY

Efficiency for logistics

BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ

  • Carton size
  • Weight
  • Stacking strength
  • Carton marks

Four principles. 📐

Carton size

Dimensions that fit pallets and containers; empty space burns money. 📏

Weight

Needlessly heavy packaging raises freight; see the logistics guide. ⚖️

Stacking strength

Lower cartons must carry those above. 🏗️

Carton marks

Order number, carton sequence, handling symbols; clear. 🔖

COORDINATING

Coordinating with the buyer

BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ

  • A packaging specification
  • Label approval
  • Packaging sample
  • Damage feedback

Four steps. 🤝

A packaging specification

Get the buyer’s carton, pallet and label requirements in writing. 📝

Label approval

Have the buyer approve the label draft before printing. ✅

Packaging sample

A packaging sample before the first shipment. 📦

Damage feedback

Photos and records if damage happens; packaging is improved. 📸

FOUR

Four common mistakes

BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ

  • Domestic packaging for export
  • Labels missing the language
  • Printing unapproved labels
  • Cartons with empty space

All four spoil shipments. 🚧

Domestic packaging for export

Cartons that can’t handle long journeys bring damage. 💥

Labels missing the language

Missing mandatory information means the product can’t be sold. 🔤

Printing unapproved labels

Faulty labels get reprinted on thousands of products. 🖨️

Cartons with empty space

Containers ship half-empty; freight is paid for nothing. 📦

WHAT

What should I do today?

BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ

  • Step 1: the target market’s label rules
  • Step 2: check carton size
  • Step 3: ask the buyer for specs
  • If you want help

Three steps, one hour. 🪜

Step 1: the target market’s label rules

Mandatory information and language; a list. 🏷️

Step 2: check carton size

Does it fit pallets and containers? Calculate. 📏

Step 3: ask the buyer for specs

Carton, pallet and label requirements in writing. 📝

📝 Notes From the Field

In a firm’s first container shipment some goods were damaged by humidity and stacking pressure; the label also lacked a mandatory item in the target market’s language. Packaging was redesigned for inner protection and stacking strength, and the label draft was approved by the buyer before printing. Later shipments arrived undamaged and no label-related delays occurred.
