Local produce branding in Turkey: from village product to digital brand with a GI
Local produce branding happens in two layers. The first is the shared name of the region, the geographical indication: Silivri Yoghurt, Ezine Cheese and so on. That name belongs to every producer in the area who follows the specification. The second layer is your own brand: the name on the jar, the logo, the site and the story. Customers recognise the region by the GI, and you by your own brand.
So a GI alone does not set you apart from the producer next door. When a buyer in Istanbul searches “Silivri yoghurt”, dozens of sellers can appear. The one chosen is the one who shows their name and face online.
Where does a local product’s brand begin?
A local product’s brand begins with the shared name that proves where it comes from and with your own name that says who makes it. The GI says “this yoghurt is from Silivri”. Your brand says “Ayşe’s family makes this yoghurt”. A digital brand means taking that second layer online.
Why your own name is separate
Everyone who meets the specification uses the shared name. The only thing that sets you apart is your own brand name. The general map of building a brand end to end is in the building a digital brand guide.
What does Silivri Yoghurt, 34 km from Beylikdüzü, teach us?
From TÜYAP in Beylikdüzü to the Silivri bus station is about 34 km by road, roughly half an hour without traffic. For a Silivri producer selling in Beylikdüzü, Esenyurt or Büyükçekmece, the customer is that close. At the end of that road, Silivri Yoghurt has been a registered geographical indication (mahreç işareti) in TÜRKPATENT records since 26 July 2022, under number 1180. The applicant is Silivri Municipality, and the boundary is Istanbul’s Silivri district.

What is the difference between a GI and your own brand?
A GI protects where a product comes from; a brand sets the producer apart. Everyone meeting the specification uses the GI with the emblem; only you use your brand, and registration makes the right yours. The table shows the difference in six rows.
| Topic | Geographical indication | Your own brand |
|---|---|---|
| What it says | Product is from this area, made this way | This business makes the product |
| Who owns it | The applying body or union | You |
| Who uses it | Every producer in the area meeting the specification | Only you |
| Mark | Mandatory official emblem | Your logo |
| Inspection | Inspection body named in the registration | Your own quality standard |
| Sets you apart | No, your neighbour carries the same name | Yes |
Why the brand carries the price
When two jars from the same area sit side by side, the brand explains the price gap. More in why branded products sell higher.
How many GIs does Turkey have, and who is your competitor?
According to Anadolu Agency reports citing TÜRKPATENT data, Turkey had 1,881 registered geographical indications as of August 2026. Figures released in 2026 put the number of Turkish products registered in the European Union at 46. Competition is not between regions but between producers of the same region.
Online, the gap gets wider
At the market they taste the product. Online they only see your name, photos and what is written about you. Good goods sell themselves, people say, but online you must be found first.
Which 6 steps turn a village product into a digital brand?
Turning a local product into a digital brand takes six steps: name, availability, label, legal registration, site and content. The list works the same in Silivri or any other district. The order matters, because a label printed before the name and availability are settled ends up in the bin.
- Find your name. Look for your own name, not the region’s: a family name, a village name or a story.
- Check availability. A TÜRKPATENT search shows whether a similar trademark exists.
- Build a two-layer label. Your own logo and, if there is one, the GI emblem side by side.
- Complete legal registration. If you produce food, check your business registration with the provincial or district agriculture and forestry directorate.
- Build a home. A domain and your own site become an address separate from any marketplace shopfront.
- Write the story. Production, region, season; content that answers the questions people search.
A short route to a name
We explain a nine-step method for finding a name in how to find a brand name.

Where does the Istanbul buyer look for you?
A buyer in Istanbul searches for local produce on their phone first, then goes to the market or a site. Someone living in Beylikdüzü types questions like “village yoghurt” or “where to buy Silivri yoghurt” before driving out on a Sunday. A producer whose page answers them cuts the road in half. One without is stuck with word of mouth.
Be ready for the price question
Everyone who sells local produce online hears “why is it so expensive”. You answer it with the story and the brand. See why do they only ask about price.
Say you run a small family dairy in Silivri. Your yoghurt meets the registered name’s specification and carries the emblem. But the dairy next door carries the same emblem. If you have a page under your own name and articles about how you make it, the buyer in Beylikdüzü finds you by name.
If you do not have a name yet, where do you start?
Without a name, you start with consulting. In the Build Your Digital Brand campaign, if you have no name, one is suggested during consulting, followed by a TÜRKPATENT preliminary search and availability check, which is not a legal opinion. Then the identity, a 6-page site and 108 articles are built. A GI application is not part of the campaign.
Price and places
TRY 36,000 + VAT, paid upfront; at 20% VAT that is TRY 43,200, but check the current rate on the invoice. There is a 10% coupon, and you simply mention the code when you apply or in the call. There are 12 brand places, last day 1 November 2026.
If your product is ready but your name is not, fill in the form on the Build Your Digital Brand campaign page; we start with a name suggestion.

Sık Sorulan Sorular
Producer groups, relevant public bodies, professional organisations, associations, foundations and cooperatives can apply for a GI. A single producer can apply too, if they can prove they are the only one. So the name usually sits with a municipality or a union, not with you.
According to the registration document, a four-person committee coordinated by Silivri Municipality carries out inspections. It includes experts from the municipality, the district agriculture directorate, a vocational school and Namık Kemal University.
According to the document, a logo reading Silivri Yoghurt and the GI emblem appear on the product or its packaging. So two marks sit side by side on the jar: the district’s shared mark and your brand.
In Turkey the GI emblem takes its colour from the type: red dominates for a designation of origin, green for a geographical indication, turquoise for a traditional product name. The emblem cannot be altered.
Once a regional name is registered, every eligible producer in that area can use it. At the market, five jars on one stall can carry the same district name.
If your product’s area has no registered name, you can still build a brand. In that case your own name carries the load alone.
A marketplace is a quick shopfront among hundreds of sellers. Your own site is your name’s home. Keep the domain in your name.
Brand consulting, an availability check, a 3-direction digital identity, a domain and 1 year of hosting, a site, 108 AI SEO-ready articles across 6 keyword groups, a brand guideline, a social media kit and a digital business card. Packaging and label design and a trademark filing are separate offers.
Yes. In the Build Your Digital Brand campaign, if you have no name, one is suggested during consulting. A TÜRKPATENT preliminary search and availability check follow.
Yes. As in the Silivri Yoghurt example, the registration expects the shared name and emblem to appear on the product or packaging. Your own name and logo sit next to them and set you apart.
No. GI applications are filed by producer groups, public bodies, professional organisations, associations, foundations and cooperatives. The campaign builds your own brand; a trademark filing and packaging are separate offers.
