What Machine Readability Is and Who Is Reading You

Yayın Tarihi: 15 Ağustos 2026 Yazar: Adapte Dijital Kategori: Digital Consulting
💡 Kısaca: Machine readability means your business information can be understood by a system rather than only by a person.

Machine readability means your business information can be understood by a system rather than only by a person. It sounds technical; the consequence is entirely commercial. A bank’s analysis engine, a shopping assistant and a search system are all attempting to read your data at once. Whatever they cannot read, they do not assess — they skip.

This piece defines the concept, sets out which data is read by whom, and explains how a business can check its own position. No technical knowledge is required; what is required is knowing where your information currently sits.

WHAT

What Is Machine Readability?

BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ

  • People infer; systems do not
  • It concerns form, not content
  • Fixed once, useful in several places
  • Invisibility is silent

The definition is simple: information being retrievable by a system that processes without interpreting.

People infer; systems do not

A customer sees an image reading 40×60 and understands it as a dimension. A system does not read text inside an image; if the dimension field is empty, the product has no dimensions. A person completes missing information; a machine discards it. That difference leads two parties looking at the same page to entirely different conclusions.

The definition is simple: information being retrievable by a system that processes without interpreting.

It concerns form, not content

The same information is read when written as text and unread when embedded in an image. The content has not changed, only its carrier. The problem is therefore rarely missing information — it is misplacement, and misplacement is far cheaper to correct than absence.

Fixed once, useful in several places

Correctly structured product data is used simultaneously in search, in assistants, on marketplaces and in customs declarations. This makes it impossible to measure the return on a single channel.

Invisibility is silent

Unreadable data produces no error message. Orders do not arrive, recommendations do not appear, quotations go unanswered — and none of them states why. Most businesses are unaware the problem exists and attribute the shortfall to the market or the competition.

WHO

Who Is Reading?

BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ

  • Financial analysis systems
  • Shopping assistants
  • Search systems
  • Commercial platforms and customs

The number of parties reading your data has grown, and each wants something different.

Financial analysis systems

Banks calculate ratios from ledger data and benchmark against sector peers. Readability here means records entered on time and to the correct account.

The number of parties reading your data has grown, and each wants something different.

Shopping assistants

AI assistants read product name, contents, dimensions and price to generate recommendations. An empty field keeps the product out of the recommendation pool entirely.

Search systems

Page titles, structure and content are read to determine which queries a page answers. Information embedded in images falls outside that assessment.

Commercial platforms and customs

Marketplace listings and customs declarations also require structured data. Where a product description is vague, classification goes wrong and generates cost.

WHO

Who This Affects, and How

BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ

  • Those who gain
  • Those who lose
  • Those largely unaffected
  • The indirect chain

The impact grows with the number of channels assessing a business.

Those who gain

Businesses with orderly data, populated fields and single-source management. This group enters a newly opened channel without preparation and occupies it while competition is still sparse.

The impact grows with the number of channels assessing a business.

Those who lose

Businesses whose information lives in images, attached documents and the sales representative’s head. The product may be excellent; the assessing system does not see it. The scale of the loss cannot be measured because it consists of sales that never happened.

Those largely unaffected

Businesses working with a single customer through personal relationships are untouched today. When that relationship changes, the search for a new customer meets this wall immediately.

The indirect chain

Data stays incomplete, channels do not show you, inbound demand falls, you compensate with advertising, cost rises and the data work is deferred again. Incomplete data consumes the budget of its own remedy.

HOW

How Is It Checked?

BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ

  • The copy test
  • Empty field count
  • The outsider test
  • Consistency scan

None of these require a technical team and all four fit into an afternoon.

The copy test

Try selecting and copying the dimension, material and price on your product page. If it cannot be copied, that information sits inside an image and no system is reading it. The test takes thirty seconds and fails on at least one critical field on most sites.

None of these require a technical team and all four fit into an afternoon.

Empty field count

Count how many fields are blank across your product records. The blank-field rate among your twenty best sellers is the most accurate measure of your visibility problem, and tracking it quarterly shows whether the discipline is holding.

The outsider test

Have someone unfamiliar with your sector read a product description. If they cannot tell what it is, what it does and who it suits, neither can a system.

Consistency scan

Is the same product’s name, size and price identical on your site, on marketplaces and in your catalogue? Differently written information can register as three separate products.

BÖLÜM 05

A Worked Example

BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ

  • Empty fields, reduced visibility
  • The loss sits outside the report
  • Correction is cheap
  • Priority follows revenue

Readability is not abstract; it can be calculated as lost reach.

Empty fields, reduced visibility

Suppose you list 300 products and 120 of them have no material or dimension entry. Those 120 are invisible to every user searching by that attribute. Forty per cent of your catalogue does not exist for a whole class of queries.

Readability is not abstract; it can be calculated as lost reach.

The loss sits outside the report

Because these products never appear, they never enter your statistics either. The loss is not in the report; it is outside it. And because it cannot be measured, it never reaches the priority list.

Correction is cheap

Completing fields on twenty products takes one person one day. That same day opens those products’ visibility permanently. Few digital tasks return this quickly.

Priority follows revenue

Attempting the whole catalogue makes the task unfinishable. Starting with the twenty products that generate the revenue completes most of the work on the first day.

A Solid Digital Foundation

BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ

  • Images carry no text
  • A PDF alone is not enough
  • Tables should be tables, not pictures
  • This preparation works at four doors

The most overlooked aspect of readability is imagery — where the most valuable information often sits.

Images carry no text

A size chart, ingredient list or certification detail written inside an image is read by no system. Images need alternative text, and the information itself must also exist as text on the page; image guidance is set out in the Google Search Central documentation. Evidence sitting in an image does not count as evidence.

The most overlooked aspect of readability is imagery — where the most valuable information often sits.

A PDF alone is not enough

Catalogues and technical documents offered as PDFs keep their contents off the page. The document can stay, but the same information needs to exist as page text.

Tables should be tables, not pictures

A price or size table added as a screenshot is unreadable. Written as an actual table, the same content is both readable and usable on mobile.

This preparation works at four doors

The same work pays at the bank, in assistants, in search and in tenders. We set out that connection in our guide to the period, and carry out the implementation step by step within e-commerce and process consulting.

FREQUENTLY

Frequently Asked Questions

Sık Sorulan Sorular

Does this require a developer?

Field completion and description editing can be done through an admin panel. Only structured data markup and integrations require technical support.

Should we remove our images?

No. Images persuade, text is read. Both should be present; the problem is not the image but information existing only there.

Who should write product descriptions?

Someone who knows the product should write them, and someone who knows the customers’ questions should review them. The best source is the questions the sales team receives most often.

How many products should we start with?

The twenty that generate revenue. That group usually accounts for most sales and can be completed in a day.

We are a service business with no products. Does this apply?

Yes. Service scope, duration, price range and coverage area are read the same way. A vaguely defined service produces the same outcome as incomplete product data.

Is this a one-off task?

The setup is one-off; maintaining it is ongoing. Unless completing the same fields becomes routine for new products, the picture deteriorates again within months.
