Google local search changes: how they affect small businesses in 2026
Google local search changes in 2026 come down to three headlines for businesses in Turkey. Since 18 February 2026, AI Mode and AI Overviews have been rolling out gradually in Turkey, in Turkish. The Q&A section of Business Profiles is being replaced by an AI-powered “ask” feature in Google Maps. And the chat button on Business Profiles has been gone since 31 July 2024.
For a small business the result fits in one sentence: customers are now shown an answer pieced together from your profile, your reviews and your website. If one of those three is missing, the answer is incomplete. An incomplete answer means the customer moves on to the next business.
Which local search changes are on the agenda?
There are three changes, and they all point the same way. Google is trying to give customers a ready answer instead of a list of businesses. The table below puts each change, its timing and its effect on a small business side by side.
| When | Change | Effect on a small business |
|---|---|---|
| 31 July 2024 | Chat and call history removed from Business Profile | Message traffic shifts to phone, WhatsApp and the website |
| 3 November 2025 | Q&A API shut down; AI answers in Maps take its place | Questions answered automatically from profile details and reviews |
| 18 February 2026 | AI Mode and AI Overviews launch in Turkey, in Turkish | A sourced summary appears at the top of results |
The common thread: search that answers
All three changes aim for customers to decide on one screen instead of browsing several sites. The business named on that screen wins.
What stays the same
Calls, directions and the website link remain on the profile. The doors customers use to reach you are not shrinking. What moves is the conversation that happens before they reach the door.
What do AI Mode and AI Overviews bring to Turkey?
BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ
- Customers now ask long questions
- Searching by voice and camera
- Why the source link matters
According to Google Turkey’s announcement of 18 February 2026, AI Mode runs on Gemini 3 and lets people dig deeper with follow-up questions. AI Overviews show the key facts at the top of the results page, with links to sources. Both are rolling out gradually in the Google app on Android and iOS and in search results.
Customers now ask long questions
A question like “breakfast place in Beylikdüzü, open on Sunday, with parking” can be asked in one go. The answer comes from the business that writes those details on its page and profile.
Searching by voice and camera
The announcement says questions can be asked by text, voice or camera. A customer pointing a phone at your shop window wants information about the shop right then.
Why the source link matters
AI Overviews show source links next to the summary. A business with no website cannot appear among them.

What replaces the Q&A section?
The API for the classic Q&A section on Business Profiles has been closed since 3 November 2025. According to industry sources, Google is replacing it with an AI-powered question feature in Maps, announced in December 2025. The customer types a question, and the answer is compiled from profile details and relevant reviews.
You no longer write the answer
In classic Q&A, the owner answers “is there parking” personally. In the new setup, the answer is drawn from what is written on the profile and in reviews. If it is not on the profile, it is not in the answer.
Not in every country at once
Where the new feature appears can vary by country and business category. The safest check is to open your own profile in the Maps app and see which section shows.
With chat gone, how do customers reach you?
According to Google’s help page, chat and call history on Business Profiles have not been available since 31 July 2024. Customers can still call, and eligible accounts can show text message and WhatsApp options. So the message door is not closing; it is moving.
The website is the new address for messages
With chat gone, a mobile page with WhatsApp and call buttons matters even more. How a site does this job is covered in what does my website do.
What this means for you: profile, reviews and site meet in one answer
BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ
- A hypothetical example
- If you do not show up on the map
- Neighborhood searches
The answer shown in local search draws on three sources: your Business Profile details, customer reviews and your website content. When all three agree, the answer is clear. When one is empty, AI fills the gap with a competitor’s information.
A hypothetical example
Say you run a car wash in Esenyurt, Istanbul. A customer asks for “car wash open on Sunday”. Your profile has no Sunday hours, no review mentions Sunday, and you have no website. Your name does not appear in the answer, and the till stays quiet all Sunday.
If you do not show up on the map
If the problem runs deeper and the business never appears on the map, check the six reasons in business not showing on Google Maps.
Neighborhood searches
In “near me” searches, a complete profile counts as much as distance. Street-level examples are in showing up in near me searches.

What does a customer searching on a phone see?
Local search happens mostly on phones, and new features reach the mobile app first. Our own site’s data backs this up. In adaptedijital.com’s Search Console data for 14 June to 13 September 2026, 1,267 of 1,699 clicks came from mobile, roughly three quarters.
Mobile click-through rate is higher
In the same period, mobile click-through rate was 1.86 percent against 0.57 percent on desktop. Customers on phones take the shorter route to a decision.
The top half of the screen
On a phone, AI Overviews, the map and the first few businesses fill the top half of the screen. A shop not named there is like a shop window tucked away on a back street.
What does the campaign include to meet these changes?
The Get Visible Online campaign offers one of three recipes that pull these sources together. The Website Recipe covers a mobile-friendly sales page, contact buttons, Google Business Profile, basic SEO and visitor tracking. The Google Ads and Meta Ads recipes build the ad side with account or pixel setup, targeting and conversion tracking.
- Website Recipe: profile, page and WhatsApp button say the same thing.
- Google Ads Recipe: you appear with an ad when customers ask in search.
- Meta Ads Recipe: you reach neighbors on Instagram and Facebook before they search.
The overall frame is in the digital marketing packages guide. Short route: the Get Visible Online campaign offers a 3-month period at TRY 36,000 + VAT, paid upfront at a fixed price; ad spend is not included.

Sık Sorulan Sorular
It sounds basic, but this is the door most often missed. An old line, a wrong area code or a number nobody picks up turns customers away at the threshold.
You choose one of three recipes. The Website Recipe covers a mobile sales page, contact buttons, Google Business Profile, basic SEO and visitor tracking; the Google Ads Recipe covers account setup, keyword research, search campaigns and conversion tracking; the Meta Ads Recipe covers pixel, audiences, ads and conversion tracking.
According to Google Turkey’s announcement, AI Mode and AI Overviews are rolling out gradually. So some users may see the features before others.
In the new setup, answers are compiled from profile details and reviews. Keeping hours, services and common details complete on your profile, and replying to reviews, is the most direct route.
