Business not showing on Google Maps? Why the shop next door appears: 6 reasons — Adapte Dijital cover image
💡 Kısaca: If your business is not showing on Google Maps, the cause is rarely bad luck.

If your business is not showing on Google Maps, the cause is rarely bad luck. It is usually a missing setting. Google ranks local results on three measures: relevance, distance and prominence. When the shop next door offers a fuller profile on those three, it appears on the map and you do not.

The six reasons fall under those three measures. No profile or an unverified one, the wrong category, an inconsistent address or pin, too few reviews, no other trace online, and wrong opening hours. All can be fixed.

Say you run a small bakery in Beylikdüzü, Istanbul, in the Cumhuriyet neighbourhood. You pull up the shutter at six in the morning, the bread is warm, the window is full. Someone opens their phone, types “bakery” and sees the bakery two streets away. Your shop is right across the street, yet missing from the screen.

HOW

How does Google decide who appears on the map?

In 2026 Google still looks at three things in local results. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search; distance is how close you are to the person searching. Prominence is how well known your business is. Google also states that it does not accept payment for a better local ranking.

Being close is not enough on its own

Most shop owners treat the map as a distance race. Yet a business with stronger relevance and more reviews can rank ahead of you even when you are closer. The map runs on information, not money.

RELEVANCE

Relevance: does Google know what your shop sells?

The first two reasons sit on the relevance side. Either there is no verified profile, or the profile sits in the wrong category. If Google thinks a bakery is a pastry shop, it will not prioritise it for someone searching “bakery”.

Reason 1: No profile, or an unverified one

Profiles that the owner has not verified stay incomplete and out of date. We walk through setup and verification step by step in how to set up a Google Business Profile.

Reason 2: Wrong or missing category

The primary category is the main label Google attaches to your business. If a barber picks “beauty salon”, it can fall behind on a “men’s barber” search. Choose the primary category in the words your customers search with.

DISTANCE

Distance: why does the neighbour count as close and you do not?

Distance is calculated from the searcher’s location. When the person does not share a location, Google estimates with what it knows. If your pin has landed on the wrong street, or your address is written differently across websites, Google may think you are further away than you are.

Reason 3: Inconsistent address, pin and phone

Local search has a measure called NAP consistency: name, address and phone should read the same everywhere. “Cumhuriyet Mah.” on the profile, “Cumhuriyet Mahallesi” on the site, another number on an old directory. That scatter makes it harder for Google to match you correctly.

You cannot choose where the searcher stands

You cannot control distance, but naming your neighbourhood on your profile and site tells Google which area you serve. We cover neighbourhood-level searches with a Beylikdüzü example in showing up in near me searches.

PROMINENCE

Prominence: how do reviews and your online footprint change the order?

Prominence is how well known your business is. Google reads it from reviews, ratings and what is written about you elsewhere online, so even a shop with excellent service can fall behind here. In Google’s own words, more reviews and positive ratings can improve your local ranking.

Reason 4: Too few reviews, or unanswered ones

Some shops sit on the same corner for years with three reviews. Customers are happy, yet nobody asks them. If twenty people walk in daily, asking a few each week is no heavy load.

Reason 5: No other trace of you online

A website is a second source that backs up your profile, repeating what you sell, where you are and when you open. You can see what a site does for a business day to day in what does my website do.

HOW

How do wrong opening hours make an open shop look closed?

The sixth reason is the quietest one: wrong hours. Google’s help page advises keeping hours accurate and updating them for special days. A business that skips holiday and Ramadan hours sends its customers to the neighbour with its own hands.

Reason 6: Hours are wrong or missing

Say your bakery opens at six, but the profile says nine. Someone looking for bread at ten past seven sees you as closed and walks to another bakery. For three hours, customers do not come through the door because they do not know it is open.

HOW

How do you measure the gap between you and the shop next door?

The easiest way is to put the neighbour’s profile next to your own. A six-row comparison usually shows at first glance why you are behind on the map. Fill in the table for your shop and the one ranking above you.

Check Shop missing from the map Shop showing on the map Measure
Profile Unverified Verified by the owner Relevance
Category Generic or wrong Matches how people search Relevance
Address and pin Written differently across sites Identical everywhere Distance
Reviews Few and unanswered Regular and answered Prominence
Website None Mobile friendly, address and hours shown Prominence
Opening hours Missing Up to date, special days included Customer decision

See your profile through a customer’s eyes

To see the version a customer sees, search for your business in a private browser tab. The photos, hours and replies you see there are what the customer sees.

WHICH

Which recipe suits a business missing from the map?

For a shop missing from the map, the first stop is usually the Website Recipe. It sets up a mobile-friendly sales page, contact buttons, a Google Business Profile, basic SEO and visitor tracking together, closing most relevance and prominence gaps at once.

Sık Sorulan Sorular

What is the neighbour doing right?

The shop next door has likely verified its profile, chosen the right category and asks for reviews. None of this is secret; one owner does the jobs, the other postpones them.

What should the profile say during a refit or a move?

For a refit of a few days, use the temporarily closed option on the profile. If you are moving, update the address instead of opening a new profile, so your reviews come with you.

Which fixes take one afternoon?

Category, hours, address spelling and photos are quick to fix. Reviews take weeks of habit.

When do the ad recipes make sense?

With a sound profile but heavy competition, the Google Ads Recipe adds paid search visibility. If you want to reach your neighbourhood on Instagram and Facebook, the Meta Ads Recipe fits. In both, the ad budget is not included in the package and is paid to Google or Meta separately. The general logic of packages is in digital marketing packages.

How does the package work?

The Get Visible Online campaign costs TRY 36,000 + VAT, paid upfront at a fixed price, and covers a 3-month period. You fill in a needs form, Adapte suggests the right recipe, and delivery starts with payment. For details and to apply, see the Get Visible Online campaign page.

Keep one principle in mind: a shop Google cannot see is a shop customers cannot find.

Which recipe is right for showing up on the map?

For most businesses missing from the map, the Website Recipe fits. A mobile sales page, a Google Business Profile and basic SEO are set up together. When you fill in the needs form, Adapte suggests the recipe that suits you best.

Can I pay Google to rank higher on the map?

No. Google states clearly that it does not accept payment or requests for a higher local ranking. Paid visibility is only possible in ad placements, and the ad budget is not included in the campaign package.

Will I show up right after fixing my profile?

There is no fixed timeline, because Google keeps recalculating rankings by relevance, distance and prominence. In the campaign, results are reviewed together at the end of the first month.
