Service area business: what it is and how a business with no address shows up on Google
Most people don’t know this: you don’t need a shop address to appear on Google. The service area business model is for businesses that go to the customer or don’t receive customers at their address. On the Google Business Profile the address is hidden and the districts and cities you serve are listed. Instead of a pin on the map, you show up under the name of the area you serve.
According to Google’s help page, you can add up to 20 service areas. The overall boundary should not extend beyond about 2 hours of driving from where the business is based. In 2026, the tradesperson working from home, the mobile hairdresser and the founder without a shop yet all enter Google through this door.
Which businesses count as a service area business?
A service area business works at the customer’s address or does not receive customers at its own. The plumber comes to your home, the removals firm collects from your door, the cleaning team arrives at your address. Google gives these businesses a profile that says “we come to you” rather than “visit us”.
How it differs from a shop
A shop’s address shows as a pin on the map, and the customer walks there. A service area business keeps its address hidden and the profile lists only the areas it serves. There is no front door, but the phone rings.
Why is the address hidden, and when is it shown?
The address is hidden when customers don’t come to it. Google’s rule is clear: if you don’t serve customers at your business address, remove it from your Business Profile. If you work from home, this follows the rule and protects your privacy. On the day you open a place that receives customers, you add the address.
If your home address lands on the map
Pinning a home-based plumber’s kitchen on the map is an open invitation for a knock on the door at Sunday breakfast. It also breaks the rule. Hiding the address is both courtesy and safety here.
Verification with a hidden address
Even with a hidden address, Google wants to verify the business. Verification depends on Google and can take a few days. Write that time into your launch plan from the start.

How many areas can you add, and where is the line?
You can add up to 20 service areas, and the overall area should not exceed about 2 hours of driving from your base. You define the areas by city or district name. A few real areas beat many empty ones. Listing a place you can’t reach means turning work away.
| Feature | Shop | Service area business | Hybrid business |
|---|---|---|---|
| Address shown on profile? | Yes | No | Yes |
| Service areas listed? | Not needed | Yes, up to 20 | Yes, up to 20 |
| Where does the customer go? | To the shop | Nowhere, you go to them | Either |
| Example | Boutique, bakery | Plumber, removals | Tailor, AC service |
Say you’re a painter in Beylikdüzü
Say you’re a house painter working from home in Beylikdüzü, Istanbul. Listing Beylikdüzü, Esenyurt, Avcılar and Büyükçekmece is realistic. Add Kadıköy on the far side of the city and you have also sold half your day to the traffic; cut your coat according to your cloth.
The limit is a guideline
The 2-hour limit is not a casual tip; it is Google’s guideline. Limit your areas to places you can actually reach. A phone call you can’t serve wastes your time and the customer’s.
Which businesses fit this model?
Any business that goes to the customer, or does not receive customers at its address, fits this model. Typical examples are home and building services, home care and beauty, and transport and courier work. Founders who work to order and have not opened a shop yet belong here too. The six profiles below are the most common.
- Tradespeople who visit homes: plumbers, electricians, painters
- Mobile hairdressers, bridal hair and make-up artists
- Home and office cleaning teams
- Removals, couriers and house moves
- Air-conditioning, boiler and appliance services
- Home-based cake, food and craft workshops that deliver
The home-based workshop
A home workshop selling cakes or crafts appears with a service area if it does not invite customers in. The districts it delivers to are listed as areas. Later, the shop decision is made from the demand those areas send; we explain how to read it in which district to open in.
If you only sell online
A business that visits no one and only ships parcels shows up through its website and content more than through a Business Profile. Here the website and articles are the real shop window.
Without a pin on the map, what gets you found?
Without a pin, three things get you found: the service areas on your profile, website pages that name the area and the service, and content that answers customers’ questions. The profile carries you into local results. The website and content open the door for searches like “boiler service Esenyurt”. Together, having no shop stops being a gap.
An area page on your site
Give each service area at least a paragraph on your site, ideally a page. Structured data, the code behind a page that tells Google “this is a business serving these areas”, turns that into language machines understand. The customer sees the answer before asking “do you cover Avcılar?”
Why content matters
A new profile and a new site start with few reviews and little history. Articles that answer customers’ questions fill that gap. For how a website gets built, see how is a website built.

What happens to the profile if you open a shop later?
BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ
- How the campaign sets this up
- The order of the first 30 days
- Now you know
If you open a shop later, you add the address to your profile; if you still visit homes, you become a hybrid business. Reviews and website content built up during the service area period stay in place. Google may ask for re-verification after an address change, so plan for a few days. That way you don’t start from zero on opening day.
How the campaign sets this up
Adapte’s Start a Business Online campaign sets up founders without a shop on this model: with no shop, you appear with a service area. The setup includes a Business Profile, a website with 6 main and 12 sub-pages, structured data, 108 articles and WhatsApp Business. The price is TRY 36,000 + VAT, upfront and fixed, or TRY 43,200 with 20 percent VAT; check the current rate on your invoice. See the Start a Business Online campaign page for details.
The order of the first 30 days
For which step comes when in the first month, see a new business’s first 30 days. The whole approach is in open online before you open a shop.
Now you know
A business with no address can still show up on Google. The address is hidden, up to 20 areas are listed, and the limit is about 2 hours of driving. When the shop opens, nothing is wasted; the profile simply grows.
