The GEO versus SEO question landed on agency tables within the last year and immediately produced confusion: “Is SEO over, do I need a new budget?” The answer to both is no. 🔍

Short answer: SEO targets ranking, GEO targets being quoted. In SEO you sit at the top to be clicked; in GEO you get inside the answer. The foundations are largely shared; the measurement differs.

Below: what the two disciplines share, where they part, what GEO actually covers, how measurement changes, and the budget question. 🧭

WHERE

Where do SEO and GEO overlap?

The first surprising answer to GEO versus SEO: far less is new than you’d think.

WHERE

Where does the divergence begin?

The overlap ends here and the work changes.

What replaced the keyword?

The question. People now type “how much does a corporate website cost and what changes the price” rather than “web design price”. The brand that answers wins.

WHAT

What does GEO actually cover?

The name is grand; the content is concrete.

Three lines of work

One: a question inventory — extracting what customers really ask. Two: answer pages — each question with its own clear answer, open scope and pricing. Three: consistency and readability — the same business details everywhere and correct technical markup. The rest is repetition of those three. 🔧

HOW

How does measurement change?

The biggest difference, and the most confusing part.

DOES

Does it need a separate budget?

The real question at the table.

📝 Field Notes

We’re wary of presentations selling GEO as “a brand-new discipline”. What we see in the field: sites with good SEO that answer questions clearly are already being mentioned. What’s new isn’t the discipline but the measurement. Saying so appears to shrink the job — but it’s the honest position. 🧭

📖 Quick Glossary

GEO: visibility work for generative assistants. Quotability: a text being suitable for fragment use in answers. Question inventory: the list of what customers really ask. Markup: tagging information so machines can read it.

⚡ Quick Summary

SEO targets ranking, GEO being quoted. 🔍 Foundations shared, target and measurement different. The question replaced the keyword. Three lines of work: inventory, answer pages, consistency. Separate measurement, not separate budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sık Sorulan Sorular

Which foundations are identical?

A readable site structure, fast pages, clear headings, accurate information and content that answers a real question. These were SEO’s principles for a decade and they hold in the assistant era too. A badly built site loses on both fronts. 🧱

So why a new name?

Because the target changed. In SEO the aim is bringing the user to the page; in GEO the aim is being named in the answer even if they never visit. Same material, different window. 🎯

How do ranking and being quoted differ as jobs?

Ranking means beating competitors on the same term. Being quoted means being quotable: a clear definition, countable information, an open scope. A long, meandering page can rank but is hard to quote. ✂️

Why does content format change?

Because the assistant takes a fragment. A heading that repeats the question, a clear answer in the first paragraph, depth afterwards — that structure serves human and machine alike. The construction sits in the recommendation article. 📝

How does the off-site side work?

Assistants don’t read only your site; they read trade publications, directories and review pages. Visibility is built everywhere your brand is written about — the map sits in the sources article. 🌐

How do you measure success while clicks fall?

With three signals: mentions (asking the same questions regularly and recording), growth in brand searches and direct visits. If the classic traffic graph flattens while those three rise, the work is running; the full calculation sits in the return article. 📊

What does “same work, different eye” mean?

This: if you already produce content, building it on question-and-answer logic adds no cost. If you already do technical maintenance, getting markup right isn’t a new project. For most businesses GEO needs separate measurement, not a separate budget. The cost discussion sits in the cost article, all questions in the 18-questions hub. 💡

Should I stop SEO and switch to GEO?

No; they aren’t rivals. Search engines still bring serious traffic and GEO’s foundation is good SEO. The right move is restructuring existing work on question-and-answer logic and adding mention tracking to your measurement.

Do I need special software for GEO?

Not necessarily. Tracking ten customer questions by hand gives a sufficient picture at the start. Tools scale the work; they don’t create it. Define the questions first, discuss tools later.

Do I have to rewrite my content from scratch?

Usually not; in most sites existing content becomes quotable through reorganisation. Headings repeating the question, the answer moved to the first paragraph, and concrete information added are often enough.
