Kitchenware Brand Startup Costs: Nine Items, Three Thresholds, First Batch
The cost of starting a kitchenware brand has nine items: mould or private label, sample, migration test, declaration of compliance, packaging and box, photos and video, site, marketplace commission, and shipping with breakage and returns. We give no single total; items vary with product group, manufacturer, quantity and exchange rate. Three things do not change: the order of payment, the shares inside unit cost and the three thresholds.
Below: the nine items, who quotes each, the item-and-timing table, unit cost logic and three thresholds. No amounts.
What are the nine items, and which one gets forgotten?
Mould or private label and the product itself are the items everyone counts; the migration test and declaration are the ones everyone underrates; breakage and the box are the ones everyone forgets. The site is a fixed cost in year one; commission and shipping are variable costs on every sale. Do this: write the nine items in an empty table and note who quotes each; one quote does not make a budget.

Three forgotten items
The box, the breakage allowance and video. In kitchenware the box is protection: porcelain and glass break, cast iron is heavy. Video is half the product, because it shows how the pan releases food.
Who gives the quotes?
The nine items need quotes from at least six named contacts: the manufacturer prices mould, sample and product; a lab the migration test; the manufacturer or a consultant the declaration file; a packaging firm the box; a photographer the images; an agency or platform the site. The channel sets commission and the carrier sets shipping. Threshold: an item without quotes from two contacts goes in as an estimate and is flagged.
The single-contact trap
A maker handling everything is convenient but hides the test inside the unit price. Ask for items separately, then combine.
Link to manufacturer selection
Which items stay with the manufacturer and which with the brand becomes clear in the interview. We give the twelve-question list in the manufacturer selection article.
When is each item paid?
Items are paid at three points: before the sample, before the first batch and with each sale. The order is your cash flow; a brand that pays for the product but forgets the box leaves the batch sitting bare in storage. The table lists the nine items by timing, contact and type; fill the empty column with your own quotes.

Table
| Item | When | Contact | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mould or private label | Before the sample | Manufacturer | One-off, per model |
| Sample | Before the batch | Manufacturer | One-off, often offset |
| Migration test | Before the batch | Lab | Per product and material |
| Declaration of compliance | Before the batch | Manufacturer, brand file | Renewed when batch or material changes |
| Packaging and box | Ordered before the batch | Packaging firm | Per unit |
| Photos and video | After sample approval | Photographer, video team | One-off, per product |
| Site | Before launch | Agency or platform | Fixed, monthly or yearly |
| Marketplace commission | With each sale | Channel | Per sale, from margin |
| Shipping, breakage and returns | With each sale | Carrier, brand | Per sale, by product group |
How to read it
Items paid before the batch need cash; items tied to sales come out of margin. The channel decision opens or closes the commission row; the comparison is in the own site, marketplace or housewares shop article.
Unit cost logic: what is inside one product?
The unit cost of one product has five parts: purchase price, box and manual, test and document share, mould and visuals share, shipping and breakage share. The first two appear on the quote; the other three do not, but they sit inside every unit. Do this: divide one-off costs by the product’s expected annual quantity and add a breakage share by product group.
Formula
| Line | What | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| A | Purchase price | Manufacturer quote, per unit |
| B | Box and manual | Packaging firm and printer, per unit |
| C | Test and document share | Test and declaration cost divided by expected annual units |
| D | Mould and visuals share | One-off cost divided by expected annual units |
| E | Shipping and breakage share | Carrier and the product group’s breakage record |
| Unit cost | A + B + C + D + E | Price is built on top of this |
The too-many-products mistake
One-off costs spread over units, so slow sellers push unit cost up. Start with a hero pan and two companions, not a twelve-piece set.
How do breakage and returns enter the calculation?
In kitchenware, breakage and return rates vary by product group: porcelain and glass carry the highest breakage, steel and cast iron the lowest, though cast iron’s weight raises shipping. For coated products the reason for return is not breakage but coating complaints. Do this: run a shipping test with the first batch and add the result to unit cost as a relative share.
The shipping test
Send five boxes to yourself via different carriers and cities, then open them. It is cheaper than a packaging redesign.
Warranty and spare parts
Spare lids and handles turn returns into exchanges and build loyalty; print the promise on page and box.
Three thresholds: mould or private label, test and documents, stock and storage
Mould or private label threshold: no talk of series prices until mould rights or private label terms are in writing. Test and documents threshold: if the migration test report and declaration are not on file, the batch does not go on sale. Stock and storage threshold: kitchenware is bulky, so the first batch does not exceed storage space or three months of forecast sales; boxed sets need a room, not a shelf.

How do you size the first batch?
BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ
- The most common mistake
- Public support
- To do today
The first batch is no larger than three months of forecast sales and follows depth first, variety later. Do this: list channels and shops, set a weekly forecast for each, multiply by a quarter and split the result across a hero pan and two companions. If you are entering the trousseau season, the batch is ready before the season starts.
The most common mistake
A big batch and many products to cut the unit price. Cash gets tied up, the best-selling colour runs out, slow sellers stay in storage and nothing is left for the second batch. We give the pre-launch check in the twelve-point checklist.
Public support
New entrepreneurs can look at KOSGEB (Small and Medium Enterprises Development Organisation) support programmes; scope and terms change by period, so check the official page before applying. Support does not build the budget; it covers a missing item.

Because it seems to add nothing to sales. Yet without a migration test and declaration the product cannot reach the shelf, and it is the first document asked for in an inspection. Where it is asked for is in the food contact material rules article.
Boxed sets take space; a big batch lowers unit price, but storage and tied-up cash take it back.
The brand sets the thresholds, not the manufacturer; the manufacturer wants a big batch, the brand answers with three thresholds. Brand consultancy sets the scope; the wider picture is in the kitchenware brand industry guide.
There is no single figure; the nine items vary with product group, manufacturer, quantity and exchange rate.
It is a one-off item per product and material, divided by expected annual units and added to unit cost. It is renewed when the material or coating supplier changes.
As many as three months of forecast sales, without exceeding storage space. Depth first, variety later; a hero pan and two companions are enough.
