85% Plan Training, the Gap Stays Open

85% Plan Training, the Gap Stays Open — Adapte Dijital cover image

Most employers plan training. Yet the skills gap remains the main barrier to transformation. The World Economic Forum’s measurement puts two figures side by side: 85 percent of employers plan to upskill their existing workforce, while roughly two-thirds still name the skills gap as the primary obstacle.

Read together, the two numbers reveal a contradiction. Everyone plans training and the gap does not close. The reason is the distance between planning and doing. Planning training is a meeting. Getting training into the work requires an arrangement.

WHAT

What the Number Says

BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ

  • Training has become the dominant strategy
  • Nearly half plan to shift staff into other roles
  • The gap is not limited to technical skills

Three findings.

Training has become the dominant strategy

85 percent is a very high figure; close to a consensus. Those planning layoffs are a minority. So employers worldwide have concluded that retraining an existing employee is easier than finding a new one. The same holds for small business: retraining an experienced colleague beats finding someone new and waiting out the settling-in period.

Nearly half plan to shift staff into other roles

The report notes that a significant share of employers intend to move people from exposed roles into other parts of the business. So the aim is keeping the person and changing the task. That strategy does two jobs at once. It closes the skills gap and keeps experience inside the company.

The gap is not limited to technical skills

AI and data top the fastest-growing skills list. But the list does not end there; the human side follows immediately: analytical thinking, resilience, flexibility, continuous learning. So the person you need is not just someone who knows the tool. Someone who keeps learning. Tools change; the habit of learning stays.

WHAT

What the Headline Misses

BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ

  • Planning and doing are different things
  • Training completion rates rose
  • In a small team the gap is more visible

Three details.

Planning and doing are different things

85 percent plan training, and the skills gap remains the first obstacle. That suggests some plans go unexecuted, or the executed ones never reach the work. Setting a training budget is not the same as building a skill, and the difference lives in the transfer problem.

Training completion rates rose

The same report notes that half the workforce completed learning programmes, a clear increase on two years earlier. So there is progress on participation; people are joining training. The problem is not attendance. It is what comes after: they enter the training and cannot use what they learned.

In a small team the gap is more visible

In a large organisation a skills gap can be covered by another department. In a five-person team one person’s shortfall lands directly on the work, and there is no second person to compensate. That is why training in a small business is not a human resources topic. It is an operations topic; who learns what determines who does which job, and that shows up in delivery times.

WHAT

What a Business Should Do

BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ

  • Cost: planning is cheap, doing takes hours

Three steps.

Cost: planning is cheap, doing takes hours

Writing a training plan takes an hour. Carrying it out takes hours every week. So be realistic: rather than putting three people into training at once, start with one. Three half-finished trainings are worth less than one completed. And the completed one makes the second easier, because an example forms in the team.

First step: write the gap with names

“We have a skills gap” achieves nothing. In which job, in which person, which skill is missing? A training plan cannot be built before those three questions get answered name by name. The task map produces that answer.

Next step: discuss the reallocation

Training does not only add a skill. It changes the person’s role. Which task will the new skill serve? Which task gets dropped? Unless this is discussed, employees see training as extra load. Discussed, they see it as an opportunity. The difference comes out of a single conversation, held before the training.

Everyone is planning training. The difference will show in those who finish the plan.
