Starting a Bag Brand in Istanbul: Where to Find Leather, Workshops and Boutiques
In Istanbul, a bag brand finds leather in the Tuzla Leather Organised Industrial Zone, leather workshops around Zeytinburnu and Kazlıçeşme, textile workshops in Merter and Güngören, hardware in Tahtakale and Eminönü, and packaging in Bayrampaşa. The first concept store is in Karaköy, Cihangir, Nişantaşı, Kadıköy Moda or Arnavutköy. The second hub, İzmir Menemen, is for export batches, not year one.
We give districts and observations, not addresses or figures. A brand that does not know the streets finds neither the workshop nor the boutique.
Where in Istanbul do you buy leather?
BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ
- Tuzla Leather Zone
- Local observation
- Industry source
Leather supply is in the Tuzla Leather Organised Industrial Zone, where tanneries, wholesalers and colour cards sit together. The founder can buy the leather or leave it to the workshop, but a brand that chooses without touching it and taking a colour card home gets surprised in photos. Go to Tuzla once before the sample and once before the batch.

Tuzla Leather Zone
Full-grain, corrected-grain and split sit on one street at different price bands. A founder who does not know what to buy takes what the craftsman suggests; leather types are in the genuine, faux and vegan leather article.
Local observation
In Tuzla the first question is square metres, the second colour, thickness third. A founder who opens with thickness wins the craftsman’s attention, because thickness decides how a bag holds its shape.
Industry source
For Türkiye’s position in leather goods, İDMİB (Istanbul Leather and Leather Products Exporters’ Association) is the official source; read market claims there, not by word of mouth.
Where are the leather bag workshops?
Leather bag workshops cluster in Zeytinburnu, around Kazlıçeşme and along the Merkezefendi line, home of the leather garment trade. Cutting, stitching and edge paint may sit on different floors of one building. Workshops charge per unit, price patterns and samples separately, and talk in dozens per model, not thousands; this cluster suits a small brand perfectly.
Zeytinburnu and Kazlıçeşme
Patterns hang on the wall; they show which silhouettes the craftsman knows. You can see three candidates in one day; the three-candidate rule is in the workshop selection article.
Local observation
A craftsman often pulls the first sample towards a silhouette he knows. Arrive with a measured drawing and a reference bag; a silhouette described in words becomes his.
Where are textile bags, hardware and packaging?
BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ
- Merter and Güngören
- Tahtakale and Eminönü
- Bayrampaşa packaging
Textile and canvas bag workshops are in Merter and Güngören, inside the garment cluster, where totes are stitched. Clasps, zips, rivets and chains are found shop by shop in Tahtakale and Eminönü, imported and local side by side. Boxes, dust bags and cards are printed in the Bayrampaşa packaging cluster.

Merter and Güngören
Canvas, workshops and print shops are within a few streets, and corporate canvas bags turn fast. A fibre label is compulsory on textile bags and workshops do not add it unprompted; see labelling rules and inspections.
Tahtakale and Eminönü
Hardware is the most noticed part of a bag and the cheapest corner to cut. Local observation: few founders hold a clasp against the leather in daylight, so photos show two colours. Ask here for a written nickel statement.
Bayrampaşa packaging
Boxes, dust bags and cards come from one street, a sample box in a week. Why packaging is half the product is in the photo-first method.
Where are the concept stores and boutiques?
BU BÖLÜMÜN ÖZETİ
- Nişantaşı
- Karaköy and Cihangir
- Moda and Arnavutköy
- Local observation
A leather bag’s first shelf is a concept store, and five districts stand out: Nişantaşı, Karaköy, Cihangir, Kadıköy Moda and Arnavutköy. Nişantaşı has a high price threshold, Karaköy and Cihangir draw design buyers and visitors, Moda young locals, Arnavutköy weekend strollers. In all five the owner decides, and you enter with a boutique pack and consignment.
Nişantaşı
Owners inspect edge paint and clasps before the leather; no box, no entry. Price is compared with imported brands, not faux leather; see the leather bag brand first-collection case.
Karaköy and Cihangir
Stores host local design buyers and foreign visitors; story and photos sell. The first boutique pack is tested here.
Moda and Arnavutköy
In Moda young buyers buy for themselves and share; totes and small leather goods move, pricey handbags struggle. Arnavutköy boutiques work in small quantities on consignment.
Local observation
Owners in all five ask: what happens in the rain, and what if it does not sell? A care card answers the first, a consignment promise the second. Compare channels in the own site, marketplace and boutique comparison.
When does İzmir Menemen come in?
The leather free zone in İzmir Menemen is Türkiye’s second leather hub, with tanneries and leather goods makers working side by side for export. It is too early for an Istanbul brand in year one, but right for a brand sending small batches to European online boutiques or scaling one model. You go there for batches, not samples.

For export
The export paperwork follows the framework on the foreign trade consultancy page. Small European online sales can still run on an Istanbul workshop.
District map: what is where?
The table splits Istanbul into six jobs for a bag brand: leather, leather workshop, textile bag, hardware and packaging, first shelf, export batch. Each row gives the district, what you find there and when you go. Your first month runs on the first four rows; the last two wait for the season.
Map table
| Job | District | What you find | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leather | Tuzla Leather Zone | Tanneries, colour cards | Before sample and batch |
| Leather workshop | Zeytinburnu, Kazlıçeşme, Merkezefendi | Cutting, stitching, patterns | Sample and first batch |
| Textile bag | Merter, Güngören | Canvas workshops, printing | Totes, corporate |
| Hardware and packaging | Tahtakale, Eminönü, Bayrampaşa | Clasps, zips, boxes, dust bags | With the sample |
| First shelf | Nişantaşı, Karaköy, Cihangir, Moda, Arnavutköy | Concept stores | Launch |
| Export batch | İzmir Menemen | Leather free zone | Volume and export |
Where do you start in Istanbul today?
Visit three places today: a leather workshop in Zeytinburnu, a hardware shop in Tahtakale and a concept store in Karaköy. Ask each what it would need from a small leather bag brand. The workshop wants drawings and quantities, the shop wants tones and quantities, the store wants a pack and consignment; together they are your brand’s first page.
Three visits, three answers
The answers point to three articles: choosing a workshop, cost and the first batch, the launch checklist.

Sık Sorulan Sorular
Small workshops often want the founder to buy; larger ones invoice their own supplier’s leather. Whoever buys owns the price validity, because leather prices move with the exchange rate; see the article on choosing a workshop or contract manufacturer.
If the workshop cuts it, the pattern stays there; if the founder pays and writes ownership into the contract, it belongs to the brand. This is the district’s most common dispute, settled by contract, not good faith.
Once three batches have run through the Istanbul workshop, repeat orders appear and one model passes its unit threshold. Thresholds are in the cost article, stage diagnosis in the hub article.
The district plan and channel order are the work of brand consultancy. For the sector overview, see the bag brand sector guide.
